UNED’s Mission Statement
UNED, Universidad Estatal a Distancia, is an autonomous public institution. Its mission is to offer higher education to all segments of the population, especially those that due to economic, social, geographical, cultural reasons, or to age, gender or disability, need opportunities for a real and equitable insertion into society.
To accomplish its mission, the Institution makes use of various technological means that enable interaction, independent learning and a humanistic, critical, creative education committed to society and the environment.
UNED is committed to academic excellence, to the development of culture, science, arts and human rights for the construction of a fair society and a culture of peace.
UNED’s Vision
UNED is a leader in distance teaching and learning processes by using technology and other social media in an appropriate and pedagogically mediated way. This Institution trains people to think and act critically, creatively and independently and thus perform successfully in a self-instructed context.
In order to do so, it will promote the continuous search for excellence and academic rigor in its most fundamental academic demands: education, research, extension and production of teaching recourses to achieve the desired levels of higher education in terms of quality, relevance and equity, consistent with the demands of the various groups of the Costa Rican society.
Its academic role will be essentially regarded as a role of creation, reaction, transmission and democratization of knowledge.
The University will take a leading role in the development of the country, being its main goal the inclusion of its graduates into society so that they can look for a socially-committed and tolerant coexistence, for the strengthening of democracy, and the respect for the environment.
